The Rise in Vaginal Suppositories for Pelvic Pain, Period Pain & Endometriosis

    Re-posted from the Ladibug substack

Vaginal suppositories are experiencing renewed attention and innovation as a targeted, effective approach for managing pelvic and menstrual pain. This trend is being driven by both advances in pharmaceutical formulations and a growing body of evidence supporting their efficacy, particularly for conditions where traditional oral medications may be less effective or cause unwanted side effects.

What are vaginal suppositories? (FYI they look like mini plastic bullets!)

Medication and supplements can be absorbed in many different ways — including orally (like pills), through injections, inhalation, and even vaginal insertion. Vaginal suppositories are simply another method of delivery.

Vaginal suppositories are solid medications designed to be inserted into the vagina, where they melt (dissolve) and are absorbed directly into the local tissues and bloodstream. This route allows for faster and more localized relief compared to oral medications, which must be metabolized through the digestive system.

When would you use vaginal suppositories?

Vaginal suppositories have traditionally been used to treat:

    1. Bacterial or fungal infections, such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis (BV).

    2. Vaginal dryness - specifically for the peri/post-menopause community.

However, recent studies suggest that vaginal suppositories containing CBD may significantly reduce the frequency and severity of period pain and pelvic discomfort.

Researchers at the McClean Hospital Imaging Center and Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts recruited 307 women, 77 of whom were given the vaginal suppository Foria, which contains 100 milligrams of CBD. This group demonstrated significantly reduced frequency and severity of menstrual-related symptoms, with at least 72.9% experiencing moderate improvements of symptoms after 1 month and 81.1% after 2 months.

What does this mean for the endometriosis, dysmenorrhea (severe period pain) and pelvic pain community?

This indicates promising and exciting innovations for pain relief! These formulations may help act as muscle relaxants and reducing uterine cramping, pelvic floor tension and localized inflammation. Though research is still evolving, this solution represents an important step toward more personalized, body-aware pain management options for those who often struggle to find relief - and Ladibug is damn excited about it!

    What suppositories does Ladibug stock?

We just onboarded Octavia which offers clean, vaginal suppositories that contains 150mg of CBD. Octavia is a brand focused entirely on endometriosis and has had very strong customer feedback so far.
