What are pelvic wands?
A vaginal pelvic wand is a smooth, curved tool designed to help release trigger points or tight muscles inside the pelvic floor. Think of it as a way to gently massage deep internal tension. Pelvic physical therapists often recommend pelvic wands for people experiencing:
-
Painful sex (dyspareunia)
-
Vaginal muscle spams (aka vaginismus)
-
Postpartum people with scar tissue from vaginal tearing
Wands can be used vaginally or rectally, and come in both vibrating and non-vibrating options. Here's how to decide which may be right for you.
Non-vibrating wands
Firm, curved tools designed for manual pressure. You guide and hold the wand to press into tight muscles or trigger points at your own pace.
Benefits:
- Excellent for precise, targeted release
- Easier to control pressure manually
- No charging or batteries
- May be ideal for those sensitive to internal stimulation
Best for:
- People who want a simple, no-tech tool
- Following specific physical therapy instructions
Vibrating pelvic wands
Offer all the same features as non-vibrating wands—but with gentle, customizable vibration added. This can help muscles relax more easily and enhance circulation.
Benefits:
- Vibration can calm overactive nerves and reduce pain
- Helps relax tight muscles in a different way
- Often comes with adjustable intensity settings
Best for
- Those with chronic pelvic pain or hypersensitivity
- People who benefit from gentle desensitization
- Uses wanting more options in therapy
Step by step: how to use a wand
1. Wash your wand before every use (see below on 'how to wash your wand')
Always wash your wand before every use, even if it's brand new out of the box. Wash your hands and wand with gentle, non-fragranced soap.
2. Choose a calm, private space
Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can relax. Make sure you won’t be interrupted.
3. Choose an end to start with
Choose whichever end is more comfortable for you. If you are working with a pelvic PT, they can advise you here.
4. Use water-based lubrication
Apply a generous amount of water-based lubricant to both the wand and your vaginal opening. This reduces friction and helps with comfort. (Avoid silicone-based lube as it can damage the device).
5. Get into a comfortable position
Lie on your back with your knees bent, or lie on your side with one leg slightly forward. Whatever feels most natural to you. Have pillows nearby to use as props to support your legs so you can relax fully.
6. Breathe and relax your pelvic floor
Before insertion, take a few deep breaths. Try to consciously relax your pelvic floor—imagine your muscles softening or “melting” downward. Insert on the exhale. If you are using a vibrating wand, select the vibration setting that is right for you.
7. Find tender points
Think of the vagina as a clock, 9 o'clock is the right side and 3 o'clock is the left side of the vagina. Sweep from 5 to 1 o'clock and 7 to 11 o'clock. When you find a tender spot, pause there. Give the muscles time to relax and soften before you move on.
8. If you have a vibrating wand, turn on vibration once you find tender points
After you find the tender points, select the vibration setting that is right for you. No need to have the vibration on the whole time or right from the beginning.
7. Repeat 1x2 per day
It is okay to start with every other day! We know it takes a while to get use to.
How do I clean my wand?
- Wash your wand with warm, running water and a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soap before and after each use. Rinse thoroughly to remove any residue, then pat dry with a clean towel or allow the wand to air dry thoroughly.
-
Store it in a clean, dry pouch or container—ideally the one it came with.
-
Avoid using harsh cleaners, alcohol, or antibacterial soaps, and only boil or sanitize it if the manufacturer specifically says it’s safe.
-
Proper cleaning helps prevent irritation and infection, keeping your wand safe and ready for use.
-
After every use, urinate to flush out your urethra. It’s like peeing after sex: even if you don’t have much to empty, this is a helpful post-session practice.
Always use your pelvic wand under the guidance of your doctor, pelvic floor therapist, or other healthcare professional—they can help you choose the right size, create a safe routine, and support you through each step of the process.
